Default ma father in laws sick vec - please help guys

hi, got my father in law in tonight. hes got a 52 1.8 vec sxi. now hes been have running problems with it. mainly running like a bag o ****. if he is comming to a junction and dips the clutch it sometimes stalls. and its idleing really rough. give it a rev and wen i drop back down it will stall. hes got the eml light on so i decided to do the code read pedel test thing. this is what it came up with.

    0036 heater circuit -
0704 clutch switch - assume this is why the cruise control doesnot work?
0170 fuel trim malfunction bank 1 - not a scooby what that means!
0136 02 sensor circuit malfunction bank 1 sensor 2 - lambda sensor faulty?
1565 speed control switch out of range high - not a scooby again.

any help in getting his car running smooth again would be great.

Although i ain't had a petrol for years, my brother had very similar symptoms on his vec b, if it were me i'd replace the crank sensor & take it from there... it worked for him.

the problem is 0170 covers a wide load of possible causes:
    o2 sensor & or connectors
    Maf sensor
    cam or crank
    or possible air leak

imo it's always best to start with the cheapest & most common first

    Vehicle : Signum

    Trim : Design

    Engine : 1.9 CDTi

P0170 is long term fuel trim too rich.

The ecu is trying to richen up the mixture due to a lean running engine and has reached its limits.

Check for air leaks or it could be an air mass meter at fault.

If you had an oscilloscope you could check the afm.

also he sprayed a tin of butane gas round the engine bay while it was running to see if the engine note changed at all searching for leaks. prob not the best way but to no avail will try the crank sensor, if i can find it and put a new one on.
