I stayed in the Time hotel, it was just off time square. Thought it was very nice but cannot remember how much it was.
I stayed in the 'Thirty Thirty Hotel' New York
Was basic but clean and well priced. (nice Bagel shop just round the corner for Bagels and Hot Chocolate each day - went in wintertime)

Ideal if you just want to base yourself and get on with sight seeing
Also easy to remember 30-30 lol (30 East, 30th Street)
if you dont have to be staying in manhatten, i stayed in the marriott hotel on brooklyn bridge for my wedding and honeymoon. Was there for 7 nights, was nice and located about 100 yards from the tube station so you were straight into manhatten easily
I work for an airline so am in NYC every couple of months. My company own their own private hotel, so don't see the public places, but often drink in the bar of the Fitzpatrick Hotel on Lexington Ave (56th Street junction). No idea what the prices are like but the hotel looks good and the location is awesome.
Alternatively, if you're not bothered with staying in Manhatten itself, try the Hyatt Place in Secaucus. About 10 minutes on a bus to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhatten. Cheap and excellent rooms, plus it's only 10 minutes from Newark airport.
when we went we stayed in le parker meridian was a lovely hotel. and has the best burger joint there.. not sure on price she won the holiday.
