    Default Steering issue

Hi iv got a 55 reg cdti Sri, iv just been out and when I approached a right hander before a roundabout the steering felt heavy and like it wanted to go in a straight line, quite scary lol, I then threw it into another corner to see if I could re create the problem but it was fine, I thought maybe it was just the road surface but the steering does seem to be going stiff then loosening up, do vectors have a system where the steering gets heavier at a certain speed? Cheers

Sorry to say lads, but i had the same symptoms, really stiff now and again, thankfully it was under a warrenty at the time from the dealers i bought it from, but it was the steering rack! think it cost the warrenty company quite abit!

What voltage should i be getting from the battery and how do I diagnose a faulty rack, was yours leaking? A battery or alternator would make sense when it's cold and im using all electrical items I suppose, Any idea how much for a rack and labour

The battreys fine and not long had a new alternator so i dont think its that, however i do belive it could be the steering rack but how would it fix its self aftter a few miles, would it not be stiff all the time? and its not like a stiffness across the whole turning of the wheel just when travling in a straight line and then applying pressure to follow a bend in the road, it resists and so you apply more pressure and "DUNK" it frees up very strange lol iv had it in the garage twice and once they said you were low on fluid now its fine. what a load of...... that was. and the other saying it was the strut top bearing and that was fine so im just dealing with it atm. but would be very interested to find out what it is lol.

Mine dosent appear to have done it again, I'm thinking it may of been an air lock as I had just come back from the garage or even the road surface or the tyres fitted, I'll keep an eye on it, I did look at steering racks etc just in case and ita not that expensive of that's the problem, I think I seen exchange remanufactured racks for about £120 on eBay and alternators for about £100, if you do find your problem let me know, cheers

guys have you checked the power steering fluid level, i had a similar problem, pump was leaking and the fluid was mega low, steering felt fine while normal driving but as soon i tried a U turn for example it wouldnt have it, went really stiff like i'd just cut the engine out.
