Only way is Tech2 or Opcom maybe someone in your area will be able to help read codes or you could try the pedal test.

Might be best to give some more details like is light on all the tine, Is car in limp mode , Is car running right ?

thanks for the quick reply, car has little power, still runs, i guess this is called "limp mode".
the light started intermitantly and now is on all the time. i notice over the last few months that when on idle it wasn't running smooth all the time but soon went when warmed up, this may have been the start of the problem ...
is there anyone in the eastbourne area with a tech 2 ?
i see people have tried a pedal test but does it work on this car ?(2004)

    thanks in advance

Pedal test won't work on any DTi engine. Is it the emissions or ECU warning light on?

Some faults need to be reset via Tech2 or similar once they have been fixed whereas others just disappear immediately after the fault condition disappears or a short time later.

If you think you have found the fault, you can fix it and then see if the fault light disappears by itself. If not, disconnect the battery negative terminal for half an hour and see if that does the trick. If not, the fault light will need resetting via Tech2 or similar.

The fault code reader / resetter options for the DTi are Gendan's Vauxcheck for £80, Opcom / Vauxcom from Ilexa for about £600, or Tech2 for heaven knows how much.

Here's a list of common faults that seem to happen more often than not with the Dti.
1/Check the 2 hoses on top of the engine as you look down both left and right, they tend to start with a small split which gets larger over time, eventually throwing the fault on permanently.
2/The vacuum hose ends which are made of perishable rubber tend to split, this puts the fault light on..Check all small vac pipes and rubber joiners for splits.
3/? MAF sensor..needs to be tech 2d for that common fault.
4/ Check the EGR valve for operation,Look on here for the "how to".
Try numbers 1 2 and 4 in that order before looking at the Maf..hope this helps.

thanks for all your advice peps, had the friendly mech out this morn after i check a few bits myself, he read the fault as one of the following.

P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Malfunction
P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
P0402 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected
P0403 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Malfunction
P0404 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Range/Performance
P0405 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit Low
P0406 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit High
P0407 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor B Circuit Low
P0408 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor B Circuit High

not sure exactly which 1 as i wasn't looking, he showed me a vauxhall update that advised to cut 1 wire at the sensor, he did this and the code was clear and car seems fine as i drove round the bloke.

seems like a quick fix and not sure if already posted as could save a few quid !!
