    Default still rattling!!

ok....last week my cdti 150 started rattling from around the belt area...also noticed the guide wheel between the crank and air con was missing....got another wheel and new tensioner but this didnt help....replaced the bottom pulley tonight and the rattles still there....mainly on tickover....worryingly there's now a whirring noise coming from there too that i can hear when i rev the engine....when i remove the aux belt all the rattles and whirring noises go...only thing i can now think of is its something to do with the cambelt side of things....just think it would rattle all the time even with the aux belt removed...could the pressure from the aux belt be causing the crankshaft pulley to rattle???...this is its second engine and has done 45k (replaced under warranty)

how easy is it to fit a new cambelt?...can get a kit from euro car parts for £111

Did you check the vibration damper pulley for play? this is what most people call the crank pulley and is held on with four bolts to the crank. They are made up of two parts, so try wiggling it in both directions to check for play. It might well be this rattling or maybe the clutch pulley on the alternator.

thats the pulley i just replaced....i still hope its something attached to that belt....last week was expensive with the dmf going too!

i didnt know the alternator could rattle like that?...how do i check it....am still thinking about the ac unit too....is it meant to make a metallic sound if i tap the pulley?

ahhhh!!!! it could be the aircon pump, have you tried switching the aircon on and off with the engine running? and if so does the rattle change note? The pulley on the aircon is i believe electrically operated, so when the air con is switched on, the pulley engages to drive the pump and when switched off, disengages and freewheels on the pump. It might well be that it's failing. I am insure of how you would check it any further, but i'm gussing it shouldnt rattle. Just another thought, if you were to get a shorter belt from the motor factors and by pass the air con unit, you can still run the car and see if the rattle goes away, if it does, then the ac unit beggered.
