confused Help please! 04 Z18XE runs badly & gives OP-COM code P0170-11 Fuel Trim System Rich

    My car is a Vectra C 2004 Z18XE (1.8 Petrol) with 72k miles.
Can anyone help narrow down the following problem:
Car runs badly & misfires-especially when cold and at idle, hesitates & does not want to take the throttle unless pressed nearly all the way down. Better at high revs, but still lumpy.

Running OP-COM gives the following error codes: P0170-11 Fuel Trim System Rich
    Here is the actual log.

OP-COM - PC based diagnostic tool
    OP-COM - CAN Communicaton Window> 2004|Vectra-C / Signum|Engine|Z 18 XE
    Read Info...
    Identifier: 0x0206
    VIN: W0L0ZCF6941234567
    Hardware number:2004000
    Part Number:55352666
    Software version number: 6586085115
    Motor type: Z18XE
    Hardware key number: ’’’’’’’’’’
    System description: SIEM 0100
    Type approval number: S03010
    Alpha code:
    Hardware manufacturer system name: SIMTEC71.5

Total number of fault codes: 1
P0170 - Fuel Trim System Rich
    (11) - Present

What would cause this error and how can I narrow it down - Some of these?
or would I have more fault codes in OP-COM?

    Mass Air Flow Sensor
    Lambda O2 Sensor
Spark Plugs and or Coil Pack
    CAT
EGR (How can I tell if my car has one?)
    ECU

    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Default

The z18s tend to kill coil packs. I'd try one if those first after cleaning the tb etc.

I had the same code, it turned out to be the egr, it was rusted and sucking air in causing the car to run rich.
To test if yours is the same problem spray some carb cleaner on the egr when the engine is running, if the idle changes then its sucking air and needs to be replaced.

    Thanks ChrisBilly and Big Sig.
I'll check to see if my Z18XE has an EGR when I get home.
2004 seems to be the year that they were phased out on the 1.8

If its not had plugs lately id try that first, then a coil pack and your right EGR phased out on 2004 1.8.

my vec 1.8 was made in november 03 and regestered in january 04, it does not have an egr fitted, I must be one of the lucky ones.

    Default Not the ECR.

I just checked, & this car does NOT have an ECR - thanks anyhows ChrisBilly - 1 less thing that could be wrong!

Are there any checks I can do myself on the coil pack to verify? Would a failing coil pack throw up any other codes on OP-COM?

    Lightbulb MAF - checks?

    Hi merikiito.
Thanks for this - I'm starting to suspect the MAF also.
Is there a way to check that its good or bad? Can it be unplugged while the engine is running or before it starts and Would it have any effect?
Can the MAF be cleaned? I assume its just held in place by the 2 jubilee clips that I can see.
Anything I should watch out for?

    Thumbs up

I had a Vaux. Omega 2.6 v6 which was running really badly i.e mis-firing, no revs/flatspoting, gobbling petrol up, and completely undriveable. I disconnected the MAF sensor and ran it for 3 days it was,nt right by far but it was running 90% better, changed the MAF sensor been OK since....
