Unhappy 2.2 direct very noisey top end

Hello Newb here looking for a bit of advice...
I've got a 54plate vec c 2.2 direct with a very noisey top end rattle (sounds almost like a deisel ), it's done 87k but has had all new timing/balance chains sprockets etc by local stealer at 76k 18 months ago when i bought it (after noticing a slight rattle). the noise i have now is much worse than the usual tappets in the morning noise. the noise sounds like it's coming from around the top cyl1 / timing area and goes a little quieter with higher revs. is there any easyish checks i can do my self before having to take my wallet out and getting spanked for the privilege at the stealers. Thanks.

    Angry

Had a rattle at the top end (2.2. direct).Turned out to be failure of chain tensioner.Cost me a lot of money to get it sorted.

how naff are these chains, etc if they only last 18 months !!!!
any how, decided to take off rocker cover to take a look, doesn't seem to be too much play in chain (3mm ish) unless i press hard down and that pulls the right cam anti clock wise and then you get 10mm play, but am unsure if that's due to the engine actually rotates clockwise. Couldn't get my hand to where the tensioner is to check for play between that and the left cam.

mi-tots - I had my timing chain changed 12 months ago as well as the balancing chain. Guess what I have recently had a similar noise coming from that area, I hope its not it again cost me 800.00 last time. If it is I will never ever buy another Vauxhall!
