engine sounds funny when driving

when i was driving in france the other day i took my car upto 80mph but when i get to that speed or more my car makes the reving noise that it wants to go up another gear, but obviously my car has 5 gears, please advise on this

3K is right. Have you been at this speed before?

3k doesnt seem right to me mine is a 2.2 DTi auto and it sits at 2400 at 80 :/

Contrary to what the OP has as his user name, he has a 2.2 petrol

shouldnt that rev lower than a diesel then ?
