    Default Thermostat / Antifreeze 2.0DTI

My car takes a long time to warm up, especially in the cold. I think the thermostat is functional as once the temperature creeps up the temp gauge drops. But takes a hell of a long time to get warm, but cabin temp is luke warm in cold weather. I've checked a number of threads on the forum and its probably due to the fact its a diesel and the size of the rad. Also my antifreeze has never been changed in 6 years, so heres my question:
    1) Do I need to flush the cooling system, before replacing antifreeze ?
    2) Do I simply get the car nice and hot and then drop the bottom hose on rad, to drain coolant ?
    3) Will changing the thermostat increase cabin temp ?
    4) Would blocking off some of the rad area cause any problems ?

    Thanks in advance.

I reckon you just need to change the thermostat. My 2.2Dti was running cold all the time, although cabin temp was ok, it took a good few miles to warm up and the gauge never moved. I changed the thermostat and now it sit's at 90deg on my journey to work and it heats up the cabin quicker.

Also the thermostat itself sits in a housing, Vx and most places only stock the job lot at about £60, but through someone on here and this link http://www2.qha.com/catalogues/QH03-QTH.pdf I started looking for kit # QTH600K (Quinton Hazel). My local place had part number FTK063 (First Line) as an alternative for £11.20+vat so in short I bought that, a gasket from Vx for pennies and took an hour in the snow to change it - JOB DONE!

    Hope this helps.

Sweet, thanks for that. My gauge does eventually move, and holds around 80 when I'm on motorway, but its really poor on A roads. I did ring dealers and they quote around £40 for the complete housing. I need to change the coolant, so I might as well get a new thermostat, got to be cheaper than buying the complete housing.

Changed the thermostat and antifreeze last week, abit of a pig to do, but the change is amazing, nice toasty cabin and car feels alot more responsive. Great How To..
