Acer ain't the best value for money bro, try DABS or Novatech, I'm sure they will out spec PC Wood.
woolies have a good deal on laptops at the moment and you can pic up in store.
Word of advise. Dell's aren't as good a buy as they make out to be.
Customer Service is very poor, reliablity and build quality is questionable sometimes I've deployed well over 8000 Dell's for a large Telecommunications company and have had no end of warrenty issues.
The customer has now switched to Lenovo Thinkpads, but I would imagine that these are outside your budget.
Personally if I was buying a new laptop today I'd look at Fujistu or Toshiba.
Or have you looked at buying him a secondhand one. 2 year old laptops with a P3 processor shoved full of Ram would more than easily suffice for Uni.
I had a canon starwriter at uni and that server me very well indead.
just as note I'm currently running to laptops a Lenovo T41 thinkpad for work and a Toshiba Tecra 8000 for personal use (this is at least 3 years old and runs XP loverly)
There are not many budget lappys about as students are buying them ready for college etc.
Found THIS What a bargain !!! They have none in stock at the moment but more are arriving any day according to their sales people.
good buy that.
just remember @ the bottom end the savings are on graphic capability so dont expect great gaming graphics.
