    Default laptop advice please...

At the end of the month...payday.... we are going to be looking for a laptop...could anyone please advise me on what make/spec would be best to buy for a budget of £450-£500....

Its gonna be for my eldest who is going to need one for his college course work...so it will need decent memory, and to be fairly quick, and have decent storage, and to be internet ready wireless if pos, so he can download coursework..(yeh..yeh..music and games..!!), and I dare say it will need a dvd drive and writer....also he will probably need some kind of graphics card...and it will need to tidy his room and make his bed etc....

    dont want much...do we..

we know nothing about laptops so any advice will be welcome

    Cheers...Bob

check out the Acer range of lappy's.
Good quality, and very good specs and even better value for money.
If you can (which you should be able to for that budget) get yourself a Crystal Bright screen aswell!

Make sure it comes with a good, onsite, warranty. Otherwise you'll end up having to send it away if (when) it breaks.
    Get it insured against theft.
Make sure they make copies of any work kept on it.

All the above points come from friends who have had kids at uni with laptops.

Personally, I'd go for a Dell, but it really depends on the price/spec balance.

Agree with Acer. Upcoming brand as good quality as the big boys, just not paying for the name. Laptop is as good if not better than the Vaio IMO.

But I have never been a fan of the Vaio. Overpriced and unreliable

My son has had an Acer laptop for the last year and it does exactly what it should do. Good looking and reliable as well (just like it's university student owner - not!).

I used to use a fairly old Vaio for work, until the PSU caught fire and melted my shoe!

I've been running an ACER for a good while now and although it was a budget (at the time £499) machine, it does everything it should. Even survived being dropped quite a few times too
There are lots of decent ones about at the moment. Currys have some good offers on. LINKY
Looks a decent machine for the money.
