    Default Really tickety noise from engine - 2.0HDi

    Help my mate! He drives a Peugeot 306 2.0HDI with 117k miles.

    It was always a bit noisier than other HDI but lately it's become really tappy and clacky. Here's a vid that's worth a 1000 words

    Is it a stuck valve lifter? Worn injectors? ??????? ?
    It's due a service now so would it be worth trying an engine flush to free the stuck lifter(s)?

    my mate has a 1.6 hdi and his was worn injectors making a tapping noise.

    Did it smoke? Cos my mate's HDi doesn't smoke one bit and that's what's really confusing us

    Sounds quite clicky tappy!, Id look into that & try 'not' to run it too much, It may be worth running a strong mix of fuel cleaner through it, But Try putting a good large size screwdriver against each injector & your ear, listen to each injector for unusual noises, there will be some difference between them any way but it should give you a clicking/clacking tick noise, If you have nothing unusual try the same on the diesel pump or anything near to where you think the noise is coming from, It may be internal such as a failing or lazy hydraulic tappet lifter, But it does sound quite 'metalic' as though there's contact between objects thats not going to do any good!. what grade of engine oil is he using.

    Already advised the "screwdriver technique" and he said they all sound the same. Click-clack as you say. Told him to try injector cleaner when he bought the car and he said he noticed an improvement...it got worse now and not even the best cleaners help...

    It's due a service now, but it's always been a bit clacky. I think he's using 5w30, but not sure...so could be on 10w40.

    Could be the earlier stages. Sorry but you have ruled out the injectors. Could be the tappets. I would be worried too if it were the big ends especially at 117k.
