Default some advice please re: wiper linkages

i have been told after my service that the car (03 plate 2.2 sri) has a worn wiper linkage and been quoted around 85 quid from dealer excluding fitment.

but i am unsure of whether i need a whole new linkage or whether i could buy the wipex or storm push rods and that would solve the problem?

    please help a newbie out

Yes, you could buy the aftermarket rods and then fit them when the bushes finally fail

The VX part is an entire assembly, less the motor

    Mine failed without warning
Called out the AA and they fitted a clamp which lasted two weeks
The VX dealer had to order the part for me

On a side note, if they insist you need the motor as well, you DON'T! the old motor fits fine.

I only had one side fail so fitted a temp fix of 2 tie wraps and it worked. That was about 3 - 4 years ago and they are still going strong.

Sounds like you have a different problem though and might need a linkage.

Check out the site in Search - Wiper Issues.....lots of advice on various issues with wipers........which I have also contributed as our 55 reg facelift has problems which I hope to resolve today...

The mechanism on ours is the modified one with the white plastic caps on the ball joint pivots....and is OK

A Local Vauxhall Dealership wanted £76.00 + VAT for the motor & £96.00 + VAT for the mechanism - less motor...& £340.00 + VAT for a steering wheel electronic control module (CIM I think it's called)..

I bought a motor from a 'local' scrap yard specialising in Vauxhalls... £45.00 + VAT used.. or £55.00 + VAT a Brand new genuine Vauxhall one....which I bought....hoping it isn't the steering wheel control module...

Yesterday I checked the motor out by un-plugging the existing wiper motor cable feed harness & plugging it into the new motor.....
Then....Ignition On & BINGO every function of the wiper stalk now worked........

Changed over planned for this afternoon weather permitting....

A month of frustration of the front wipers & washers only working in fast speed wipe position.....but Rear wipe/wash was OK)

    Cheers

Changed mine to the wipex rods just before xmas. Transformed the wipe action, no more overstroking & feels a lot smoother, etc.

Got my wipex rods from ebay for £26.50 including delivery. Didnt have to remove the plastic scuttle panel to renew them, a bit fiddly but do-able.

    The bushes have worn
    Eventually they will cease
You need to examine each to see which has worn
It's not that easy to access
It might be just as easy to replace the entire mechanism, that way it will easily last another three years

If you are lazy, like me, ask them to order just the linkage without the motor
Labour should be about 1 hour
