had both gas and electric changed from pre-payment to dry meters yesterday in a property I rent out. They Gas guy was telling me about these but said they were delaying the roll-out due to cost? Needless to say he fitted an old tin one. I'm all for them if they save me taking readings.

The only thing that worries me slightly is the supplier will have the power to dissconect your supply remotely, and the software will be open to hackers etc,and also it gonna run on the gsm network, and we all know how error prone that technology is,not scaremongering but it is a bit big brotherish dont ya think.

The metering will allow the company and possibly hackers to know when a house is not occuppied by the lower energy consumption during that time.

Deep joy for the tea leafs

Yes mate correct it does have its pitfalls, but when you delve into it ,its not to benefit us the consumer which in the end will pay for the meters but they themselves the energy companys have everything to gain..take this scenario...its just after Christmas its been a cold winter up to now you have limited funds, and you think to yourselves i'll spread the power bills over the next 4/5 weeks by not being in a rush to submit my meter readings..weel no more with the smart meter,as they know your meter reading..you will be billed on the exact date..there fore condemning you to pay forthwith..think about it..all i know is i will not be volunteering for a spy in my home..no way.
