Default Anyone do Plastic Model Kits

I have a few plastic model kits that I am doing for my young son to hang in his bedroom but still want to try and make a reasonable job of them but its been 20 odd years since i last did one.
I have read that it would be worthwhile priming them first, The primers seem to be very expspensive tho, £5 for 60ml. The experienced guys that paint with airbrushes seem to use automotive aerosols from Halfords, £4-5 for 500ml, but I cannot spray the models in my kitchen so brush painting is my only option.
My question is to anyone in the know, can I get a small tin of acrylic primer that is similar to the automotive aerosols at a sensible price?

I had a look on there the other day, will be ordering quite a few colours over the coming weeks as I have 3 1/48 Airfix planes to build. Been aquiring glue, brushes, pegs etc...and wondering if i'll have them time and patience I used to have.

The little tins of paint come in all colours and finishes, should be around £1.25. A good hobby shop should have a selection of makes of paint Acrylic you can wash brushes in water (and thin down with water), enamel you'd need thinners. I use Humbrol, Citadel (warhammer) and The Army Painter spraycans (www.thearmypainter.com). I mostly do 1/72 scale WW2, storage space dictates scale.
The spraycans I use putting the items on newspaper or tying up in the garage with string, similar to car cans, dries fast. Ok if you want to prime them with a base colour, or something like a Lancaster bomber, which is 3/4 black.
Railway model shops are useful, can get a lot of materials there. Oh, nearly forgot, if you want a "weathered" look, or shading on bodies, the army lot do some new stuff called Quickshade, you can either brush it on or dunk smaller parts in. Not cheap but good, 3 levels of shading.

Funny your doing this, as I am too.

Not really for my boy to be honest.

Just not done one for ages (more than 15 years) and wanted to see what standard I'd get it to now i'm grown up and sensible (ish)

    Got this.

    and due to GT5, this

    Both look quite detailed.

I built this years ago when i was driving, its almost a scaled replicar of the truck i drove whilst working for Geoffrey Reyner in Manchester. Its a little dusty now but i remember using areosol model enamal paint, its expensive but finishes it off nicely....
