Default Power Steering Pump ECU communication problem.

    Hello All,

The power steering on my 2004 Signum has stopped working. Took it to a local VX specialist who tried to read the errors using the Tech 2 system, but he said they are having problems communicating with the Power Steering pump ECU.

They are going to check the wiring to the pump, but in a worst case, they think I could need a new Power Steering pump + ECU. Had some quotes of £600+ for the Pump and ECU which sounds like alot to me.

I had a look on ebay and there are a load of power steering pumps like mine, but I struggle to find any with the ECU.

Is the ECU part of the pump? And if I manage to source a pump and ECU, will they just plug and play on my car?

    Thanks in advance, Otis

Is there an ECU as part of the power steering pump?

Same happened to mine on 03 January
No warning, it just died and warning appeared

Dealership took a guess, "Looks like the pump has failed, but it could also be the CIM"
However they advised they have had this a few times
On replacement the steering error then has to be cleared from the EMS as it remains even with a new pump
Equally, they can clear the error which reactivates the pump, but there is no guarantee how long it will last
Mine was reset and lasted all of 2 days, confirming it was the pump and not the CIM

However £600 is way over the top
The pump is about £500, but that includes a surcharge of £200, giving a net cost of about £300
    Labour is about 2 hours

    I was quoted £410
My local garage was willing to complete this for £350, but they would then have to take the car to a dealership for the error to be cleared, as they had that issue on a previous replacement
Mine is currently sitting awaiting a pump, the failed one has been removed

Hi, Have you checked the electrical connections to the pump - mine went last year and I found it was the main connection plug onto the PS pump. Just cleaned it and ensured it was connected properly and it worked fine. There are two connecting plugs onto the pump - so worth cleaning / checking both.

Have you tried disconnecting your battery for a couple of hours and then reconnecting it - this can sometimes clear a fault - make sure you have your radio code!

I have replaced one under the front wing and one behind the engine. They are easy to replace and can be got from Ebay.

There used to be two types, one with oil level sensor, one without.
Now the only new one you can get is the one without the sensor. If your car had the one with the sensor they have to program it out otherwise it will show a low oil warning all the time.

You can get them on ebay for £125 or less. I would contact www.vauxcentre.co.uk and they will help you get a good used one for a reasonable amount of money.

I cannot remember if they have to be programmed out/in to the car so check first, again vauxcentre will know. If they don't have to be programmed back in then its an easy job to fit.
Lois Griffin: Peter! You're bribing your daughter with a car?
Peter Griffin: Ah, c'mon, Lois, isn't 'bribe' just another word for 'love'?
