strange smell ..

evening guys, need to pick your brains again, funny smell coming from my car , best described (i hope) like the smell when your car is running very hot and the fan comes on ,its coming from the exhaust ,smells like steam if that makes sense , i have checked levels and they are fine , heater system is red hot , the car is running as it should with no problems (touch wood) ,it is a 05 1.8 , any ideas would be greatful ...thanks

Last time that happened to me I found my mother in law in the boot.

i actually got out and crouched down at rear of car so i could smell it ,the smell is quite strong at times , i only get the smell inside the car when i reverse , but that makes sense suppose if its the exhaust...cheers mate..

I know that smell......smells like coolant mixing with oil!!!

hope your wrong mate , i had checked the oil dipstick etc and no milky /creamy oil , the water level is spot on just now , ill take it to a garage tomorrow and try and find out ...

I hope so too, but it can be a sign or may just bee the smell from the cat. Most garages can do a test with a sniffer that they stick up the pipe and detects coolant

thought id update this as with lots of things you see you sometimes dont get an answer, well mines went to garage and it was a dirty great big plastic bag stuck to centre section...i scraped at it but it still isnt totally away and i get a waft of it every now and again, just shows you though my mind was thinking pound signs ...thanks for the input...

I have similar problem. I have VC 1,9 cdti (150PS) caravan, i bought it year ago and still have a problem. When i drive everything it's ok, but when i have to stop and engine is On inside smell gas (this what comes from exhaust) . anybody have similar problem and what what to change etc.?
Sry for my English but I come from foreign country than UK
