3.0 v6 concerns

i was wandering if anyone could help me. my 3.0 v6 is using ALOT of fuel im gatting about 29 mpg at the moment, also there is a really strong smell of exhaust fumes you can smell it as soon as you approach the car if its running and as soon as you get out when you park up, there are no warning lights on and the car was serviced about 6000 miles ago, i dont just randomly want to start changing parts as money is a bit tight at the moment,
any ideas ??

well i dont hang about in it, but if i rev it more than about 3000 rpm it belows black smoke out the back, that makes me nervous so i dont do it that often, its the mpg issue to tho i have always had over 35 i looked to day and average over 250 miles is 28mpg, im just hoping its not a major problem as i cant afford it right now.

Last year in May mine was particularly bad with the black smoking...nothing a bit of injector cleaner and HEAVY RIGHT FOOT didn't cure. It's now running good...ish

im hoping you mean the egr give up not the whole engine, if needs be i could strech out to buy a egr if it would cure the problem.
would using some 10k boost help i have heard good things about it, but never sure about sticking things in the car.

I started using fuel additives again lately and tbh I never notice a difference...What I have noticed though is that all a car needs to run great is be driven!!! Had the engine on for 12h 30min and it purred like a kitten...700miles of high speed motorway Cured the smoke completly.
