Unhappy 2nd Service - Air Con Dead!

Had my 2 year service on Saturday, tried the air-conditioning on the way home and it did not work, no cold air at all. I can hear a slight hiss when pressing the button but no cooling whatsoever, the air-conditioning was perfect before I took it in for a service. I have done only 18000 miles and the car is 2 years and 4 months old, any ideas what they might have done?

I am taking it back in tomorrow morning, having to take time off work, any ideas?

    Question Low gas?

You suggesting possible lack of gas required them to vent the system for safety? I would be suprised by low gas, my previous Vectra (2001) still has very effective air-con and has covered 3 times the mileage.

Any ideas what the average milage/age gas replacement has occurred for the C?

no.. i meant they have accidentally vented the system.. it's only low pressure or a failed compressor that should cause the AC to suddenly stop working..

VX don't stipulate a change as far as i know..they just offer to 'service' it which includes a topup every year..

    Question Ok

Thanks for that, what I thought then, they have vented it by accident, I wonder what they will claim though and if they will try to charge me?

£95!! My dealer charges £80 for a full AC service, including regas if needed.

But as above, don't pay for anything if you can help it - deffo sounds like they've done something wrong during the service!

Yeah but why would they vent the system, its a bit dangerous unless you are vaccing out the system for a reason, ie replacing the condensor or something...

    Red face Air-con Re-gassed

They re-filled the gas and wanted to charge me £79.99 for their efforts, I refused. After 20 minutes arguing they gave in and told me to take it, they claim the air-con can just stop without warning if the pressure is too low, there will be no drop in performance just no air-con. A mechanic admitted it is rare and should not have happened to a car of my age/mileage, it could have been underfilled when manufactured, if so there fault I say. Even if it did fail properly why did it fail when in their possession, I still think someone made a mistake and as usual they pass on the cost to the customer, mechanics never make mistakes they just find problems and fix them for us?

They tried the old manager out and cannot be contacted and you cannot leave without his say so routine, I told them don't be silly, get him here or his stand-in, at that point they backed down. Make a stink long enough and loud enough and sometimes you can get the right result, was a little anoyed by the guy on the desk though, he took it personally and threw the worksheet on the floor before giving me the key. Once again I have been put off main dealers.

Its hard not to take it personally when you are passionate about your job. I do the same thing he does, a customer service advisor in a garage and sometimes it can be hard...
