Non Vectra post-Fiat Ducato Van

Hi not sure if i can ask on here, but the engine management light came on Sunday i believe it was i think its a 2.2 JTD 57 Plate, (my brothers van hence the lack of specifics). And the only noticible fault was intermittent hesitation/as if it was holding back when accelerating. Didn't seem to bad according to my brother who's driving it and the mechanic he uses said bring it in Thursday tomorrow morning so as all seemed ok he drove on a few miles here and there. His say's today it's really slugish and smoking quite a bit again not full time just on and off?? Any ideas of what to prepare for, clueless with engines to be honest as is he, think he might of cost himself a few quid driving on. Anyone familiar with the Ducato or had similar problems in the past, before the smoke it had been suggested possible EGR Valve not sure if that changed with the new symptoms. Thanks for any advice given.

Had similar prob with a ducato last year,turned out to be egr then.
Not sure what engine that was though.

Could well be that then, the mechanic said over the phone thats what it sounded like from symptoms given just curious if anyone else had probs with one, worse case scenario etc so he could be ready for an est bill. He said his changed a few on the Ducatos, hopefully thats all it is then time will tell.
