    Default Brake pad life

Have just noticed that I have never had my front brake pads replaced on my Siggie and its just gone past 80k. The rear pads were done at 48k. I have looked at all my health check sheets which the stealer has done every time it has been in for services and other work and cannot really make head nor tail of the figures. The older sheets show the figures as % remaining and the newer sheets show % worn. Following them all through in mileage order the figures are all over the place so am not sure if they have been measured and/or recorded correctly.

Just wondered if there any ball park figures for how long each should last and also do the pads have the electric wear indicators built in like I have had on previous cars (the ones that give the dashboard indication when fully worn).

I guess the front pads must surely be getting close at 80k?

At 80k I would think so yes! Best get them checked properly by an independant garage. I just doubt they would have lasted that long without being changed somewhere. They get more of a hammering than the rear ones.

I bought my car at 42K, and they were almost down to the metal, im assuming they were the original one's so 80k is pretty good going.

Have you owned it from new?
If not, what mileage was it on?

Well documented on here that the rear pads wear out long before the front ones do.

It will vary greatly depending on how its driven!, my rears have been done (diy) but my fronts although are getting low have been on from new, they still have life in them & will see me to the summer when it reaches 67/68k & '7' years old.

2.2 direct bought April 2007 at 6 months old with 4k on the clock. Have checked all my receipts and bank records and the front pads have definitely not been replaced. Most of the mileage is to work and back 70 mile round trip along the A16 Spilsby to Grimsby so would guess I dont do lots of breaking on the journey, hence thats why they have lasted so long?

Got me wondering how long the actual discs have got left now too.

Replace these too at this mileage as 2x sets may be fitted in 80k on a car that does stop start journeys and replacement of discs after second set of pads.

They corrode more on the inside edge and 80k you have done very well another post on here has only got 25k!!

Really? Always thought the fronts did most of the work. I stand corrected!

They do, but as the rear pads are a lot smaller and are also used for the handbrake, they tend to wear a lot quicker than the fronts.

Still on original pads and discs on the front of my 2.2 auto Vectra - which has now done 58,000 miles; but had the rear pads and discs changed at 48,000 miles as were worn right down.
