Default Is more than 185bhp bad for clutch and gearbox?

    Hi all,

I've just had a local tuning garage tell me that I shouldn't remap my 150 cdti to any higher than 185 bhp as it is too much for the clutch and gearbox on my car. Is that likely to be true? It's a 2008 car with the standard Sri 6 speed box and standard clutch.

The remap I'm looking at takes it to just shy of 200 at the flywheel.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Rich

The DMF's are chocolate and fail easily when only running standard 150bhp, if you run even more power/torque your going to make getting a bill for a DMF more likely. So what they are saying is true kind of but its the DMF not the gearbox you should be thinking of.

Much depend of how you drive. On your car you have a F40 gearbox that can take 400 nm, so gearbox its not a big problem. The cluch can slip, but with 200 bhp it would be no problem. The "common" problem with the driveline on vectra/signum is the DMF (dual mass flywheel). On some cars this is no problem, other its a big problem. I think if you drive normal, and dont spin around all the time you will probably have some problems after a time.

    Some tip
1:Some of the vectra I have driven I could "feel" a vibrations via the gearstick with load at the engine around 1500 revs.I you can avoid this revs its good for the DMF.

2: If you tune your tell him to let the torque limit stay in the map and especially on lov revs

3: Drive normaly and use the extra power when you want to have som fun

330lbft is about the limit for stock clutches, flys etc.
a remapped one thats driven normally and only given a wee blast once and a while will be perfectly fine.
wheel spins, hard launches etc is were the damage is done.

no point having a turbo and not remapping it tbh.

Vx say the f40 gear box is good for at least 350bhp and they build quite a big safety margin into these figures so the box is no problem but as the previous posts ths dmf is a another matter on the diesels.

Simple answer is YES. Anything which upgrades the power output of the engine is going to put the clutch and gearbox under stress. DMF's will be put under stress too but they are designed to work hard at starting and labouring.

The clutch in all likelyhood won't last as long as expected for certain. The F40 at 185BHP in a deisel is typiclly working at it's 400Nm limit so anything after that isn't going to help it's life. Conversely it will still last a long time, from what I've read on this forum.

Ok, thanks for the advice guys, I'll do some thinking. Will probably go for the higher bhp but just use it carefully. I don't rag the car everywhere at the moment so should hopefully be able to control myself

Is there an uprated dmf available shoul I have problems?

Mi e is pushing the 200bhp mark now and I have had no probs at all with clutch or gearbox how ever my dmf was replaced when I bought the car about 10months before my remap so it's brand new with the clutch too but no problems as of yet and I rag it quite a bit
