Arrow Can anyone help with fuel/oil consumption on a new astra?.

I know this is not an Astra forum, but my friend has just bought a brand new Astra 1.6 and the fuel economy is crap. He's only getting about 24/25 MPG around town and has had to put about 1/2 a litre of oil in and he's only done 800 miles in it from new!!!.Has anyone got any comments on why his figures should be like this?.Thanks in advance. FELIXX.

the MPG will be crap because it's a new car, it'll improve over time. It'll probably use a fair bit of oil while it's wearing in too but that seems a bit OTT. Has he taken it back to the dealer?

I told him to sling it back at them straight away but he said he would wait until it's done 1000 miles and then get on to them. FELIXX.

Dos he drive fast or boot it upto speed?

The 1.6 issn't massively powerful and the Astras pretty heavy.

But the amount of oil to me would suggest a problem, back to the dealer straight away if it was me.

What are teh listed MPG' for a new 1.6?

When i got my Brand new astra in 2007 they only came with the oil filled to just over the minimum mark! Probably a cost cutting excersise!!
The New Astras with the 1.6 engines are painfully underpowered so that wont be helping matters. Is it an Auto? If so that makes it worse.

He said that he checked all the levels when he got it,(he's a HGV driver),and that they were all fine.He drives it very sedately, always has driven his cars with care, and isn't a boy racer in any way etc.He just can't understand it as the figures he was quoted on urban driving were around the 35 MPG mark.FELIXX.

I am sure they quote for oil use, aprox one ltr of oil per 1000 km. aprox 620 miles, some new cars are very tight,, your mate is right to give it time, mpg,, not sure there, the 1.6 aint very good on the juice, I get more put of my 1.8 vec than my mates astra 1.6,His mpg is getting a bit better its on 3500 miles now 32 mpg overall.. all town=26-28 mpg.

i had a 1.6 astra before the vectra, feb 2007 on a 56 plate, and it was horrendous on fuel, i was getting 27-30mpg, i then had a hire car new shape on a 59 plate 1.6 also, and that was barely doing 25mpg, they're also a high tax bracket for a 1.6 as well

From what i can see they are one of the lowest on emmisions (147). That puts it at £150 a year.
