    Default Swirl flap removal?

Hi there, i have a 1.9 CDTi 150 remapped to stage 2 with 208bhp and 344lbft and the car has just started suffering from the common 'sticky' swirl flap problem.

I know from experience that BMW owners often remove the flaps and put in blanking plates as the flaps in those engines often fall into the cylinder.

My question is, is there a blanking kit available for blanking off the holes where the swirlvalves where situated or would i have to machine these myself?

i know symptoms of doing this will be slightly less driveability at low load and rpm and slightly more sooty at low rpm however overall it shouldnt effect performance? as the valves are open under load anyway.

    any help willbe gladly appreciated.

    Iain

    There is no blanking available.

Disabling the swirl flaps - in theory means removing the swirl rod and disconnecting the drive module from the 3rd swirl flap spindle. The flaps would need to be put into the open position afterwards. The drive module needs to be disconnected from the mechanism as it will shut the flaps when the engine drops under 2,500rpm. Disconnecting means the ECU will still thing it's operating the swirl flaps when all it's doing is controlling a redundant drive module.

You would of course need to change the manifold as the bearings will be shot. You could always make up your blanking plates. This is unknown territory so you would be the first and I couldn't even tell what to expect problems wise should you have any. If you're going to blank them make sure the bearings are sealed up securely. Any debris falling into the engine will write the engine off.

I personally would just get a new manifold, it's the design of the old one which was/is the problem.

Hi Iain, incase you're wanting to experiment. I have a used manifold that you could have. All it would need would be cleaning out, and the flaps removing and the holes sealing up too.
I live in Perkinsville, just outside Chester-le-street should you fancy it. Pm me if you do!
