What flavour of Vectra are we talking? My GSi cost a few hundred quid labour at a local friendly and very reliable back street garage that I have used for years - and my daad before me too. I bought and supplied the kit. That was about two years ago, IIRC.

I am thinking about replacing the timing belt myself next time - and soon.

Its 1.9cdti 150 mate with 07 engine. Ive seen the kits on ebay for about 80ish and my mate said he would do it for 150 last time i spoke about it. Probally better off getting him to do it then if its a few hundred labour. I dont think I would dare do it myself like :-D I think i might invest in some tools to do little jobs and maybe build up to bigger things. If I had 2 cars, video and book tutorials i would be tempted maybe :-D

Obviously that's up to you. Mine is a V6, so more involved than a four-cylinder. My point is that it would not be likely to cost you more than, say, £200-250 for labour and possibly less. Or your mate's rate of £150, if you prefer! And why not!

Either way, all the best with it!

Is there a cooler or sumat people often change as well when they get the belt changed? Probally look into getting my mate to do it and I can watch and learn something as well. Thanks paul

Not sure about the 1.9-CDTI but on quite a few VX engines, the water pump is much easier to change whilst you're doing the timing belt, apparently. I didn't get mine done last time but am thinking of doing it next time, especially if I'm doing the labour myself.

    Hope this helps.

I am pondering the same question - To do it or to get it done, that's the question

Parts including water pump are on the good side of 200 quid (for the 1.9CDTI with 150 ponies) and that includes the Sealey tool (VSE5886) from memory. There is a superb how to guide in the forum, but there is the nagging feeling of getting it wrong anyway and writing off the engine...The Misses would never understand nor approve...
I will call my guy in Ayrshire tomorrow and see how much he would ask to do it and if it is not too much in labour I might just pay for he piece of mind.

What is the experience in the group here - any one ever screw it up???

oh yes, there have been some nightmare stories on this forum about people who've changed the timing belt themselves on the cdti. I remember at least one in 2010. Please, unless you've had some experience with this before and are confident - don't attempt it. Could go fine, and it could go pop.

The cambelt kit for the 150 1.9 is only about £114 from VX no where need £200.

My manifold is getting replaced on my cdti 150 on Friday, while it's in bits I'm having the cambelt kit replaced, the labour costs for all this work total £200 which I think is ok, my parts are coming from autovaux, cambelt kit is £80, same kit as vauxhall supply
