Default How long for the engine to warm up?

Did the stat on my 1.8 today, really easy job and the heating now works nicely. I know the stat is working properly as the pipe to the rad only got hot once the temp needle rose above about 90c.

Oddly though, it seemed to take about 5 mins before the needle moved at all. Engine running at idle and temp outside at about 3c...

    This normal for the 1.8?

Normal for most petrol cars I'd say.

engine running at idle,, well yes thats about right, I have found turn the heater control to cold/off/ no fan on and my 1.8 temp guage will rise very quickly,, there are four ways out of my village, three of them ways I have to go up quite a bank, within two miles guage is on 80/86 which is the max mine runs at unles sat in traffic.

My 1.8 takes around 10miles of city driving to get upto temp since replacing the stat.

    Tip for you.

Don't put the heater on in the car until the temperature guage starts to move off the bottom of the scale. By demanding heat straight away as soon as the engine is started will slow down the engine getting up to temperature.
