    Default timing chain question

been on the phone getting quotes for chain replacement when someone put a spanner in the works by mentioning the secondary chain. can someone explain what this does and if its advisable getting them both done at same time to save on labour costs. (2.2 direct 56 plate).

The main chain is the important one and the one that tends to go, its the one that stops the piston hitting the valves LOL. The Second chain works the balancer shafts and is far more robust. How many miles has it done mate? Pop onto the 2.2 forum and mention it over there.

Does your engine have a problem, or are you just being cautious? If it's the latter, you probably don't need to have the chains replaced - just give the car regular/frequent oil changes and use Mobil1.

bit of a rattle on start up and after reading about problems with the set up and seein as how people are reporting chains slipping and snapping between 40/60k then thought it would be wise to replace. maybe bein a bit cautious but better to be safe than sorry

If you have a rattle - get it changed.. Simple.

VX introduced a new tensioner in approx 2007.

Not sure if you are local to Benny - but I am sure he wont mind me telling you that he does them privately.. and hes VERY good.

Then you might get away with just fitting the revised tensioner.
