Default 20T Z20net Timing Chain Help

    Afternoon Chaps,

    I hope someone can help.

I've had this intermittent problem for a couple of months. sounding like a diesel on startup, like a chain being pulled over an aluminium ladder rung ? I thought it could be a stuck hydraulic tappet or two so I've just changed the oil and on examining the filter, I can see aluminium filings in there.
I've heard of 2.2 chain problems but never the 20T Can anyone confirm if they think what it could be and give recommendations of anyone in the Barnsley leeds Area who can fit/supply a chain kit please ?

That sounds like a duff tensioner to me. A chain SHOULD last the life of the engine but if it is the tensioner that's knackered, might as well replace the chain anyway. The aluminium filings in the filter I'm really not sure about though.

What mileage did you buy the car at? (As above, the chain should last the life of the car, but that's dependent upon oil changes being done).

Thanks very much for the replies,

I bought it at 52K and it has been well serviced.
My thoughts were leading me to the tensioner not activating properly on start up and the noise/filings were a result of the chain slack grating on the chain cover ?
Is the tensioner an easy DIY ? or do you think the chain has stretched beyond the limits of the tensioner. I was thinking if the tensioner is an easy (reletively) job. I wouldnt be wasting too much effort if it didnt solve the problem.

    Cheers

    Al

I wouldn't want to do a timing chain and tensioner myself unless I'd been properly shown how to do it and had a sound knowledge of any problems that may arise. Get it wrong and you'll knacker the engine. I doubt the chain has stretched that much but if you're getting the tensioner done, might as well do the chain at the same time.
