Help needed. Noise from rear of car.

Right. EML light showed on dash two days ago when I was about starting the car but went off after about 20secs of driving and car drove fine. Same happened yesterday and car was still driving ok but there was a rubbing (can't think of a better word) noise/sound coming from the rear nearside tonight when moving down slopes at slow speed or when the brake is depressed.

Any ideas of what I am up against please?

Rear of car needs to be inspected, could be anything including wear and tear, debris, damage
However, might be worn pads, discs, ceased handbrake cable, ceased caliper, out of alignment brake shield, broken spring, etc

The EML
Does this come on at every start or just occasional?
If it is occasional, leave it until permanent
Might just be the camshaft sensor nearing the ends of its life / shrinking due to cold temperature

Thanks. A lot of things to check out then.

EML comes on only when starting car from cold but the rubbing noise is consistent now even on a levelled road at slow speed. Guess engine sound at high speed muffles the rear noise.

Can someone confirm this please. If I jack up both rear of the car and spin one of the rear wheels, the other rear wheel should move simultaneously with the one I am spinning. Is that right?

No it should'nt move at all, They are not connected.

I would give the pads and disks on the rear a visual check at this point just do it on the ground without the jack it could save you messing about, check for a large lip round the edge of the disk or the surface of the disk being rough and pitted. Check the pads have life left in them if they are very low they need changed.

EML Is your glow plugs. i had same problem and when i tested them 2 were broke, which i replaced and no more light on start up

Sorry. think I should have mentioned that car is 2.0 DTi diesel with Y20DTH engine and I don't think it has glow plugs (well so I have been informed). Thanks for the reply though.

Your car does have glow plugs. The tell tale light on the dashboard doesn't come on if the outside air temperature is high enough because the ECU deems them not needed.

I think I have probably spotted what the rubbing noise is all about. The outer brake pad on the nearside has gone down to metal. Had intention of changing all front and rear discs and pads before sending for MOT but didn't get to do it and to think that car passed through MOT on 24th Dec without any advisory surprises me. Did they not spot the worn out pad/s then?
