Question what % of damage,b4 car is written off please

Can anyone tell me at what % of the cars value will an insurance company write the car off....

As you may know the wife car got smashed 2 days ago and so far the bill looks around, £3730...
    parts------£2230
    Spraying---£700
    labour-----£800

    total------£3730

Now, on parkers, the wifes car is worth £4,000

They have said they can do it "cheaper", by not using Renault parts ,,,BUT, i have said NO, It was fitted with Renault parts, so i WANT Renault parts....

    many thanks...........micky

Depends on your insurance companys policy but if i remember correctly from my time covering as a bodyshop receptionist where I use to work its usually between 60 & 70% of the cars value to make it an uneconomical repair write off

A lot of factors go into the decision, like age, mileage, pre accident condition, sometimes the newer the car the higher the percentage allowable. Soory to be the bearer of bad news though mate

God forbid it won't be Micky, but if it was your car some insurance companies will let you keep the car to repair yourself for a slightly reduced payout. Only drawback is after you've repaired it and had it inspected or MOT'd it's registered as a Insurance cat C or D write off.

John (CDTi) has had a few of these cat C or D cars with no problems.

When I wrote off my bike the insurance company settled the full price of the bike (it was 4 days old !!) when I phoned them to ask how much they wanted for it they said I could have it free !!

I would say that is a write off defo

Usually a repair that costs in excess of 50% of the value of the car for cars up to 3 years old will write it off, then on a sliding scale depending on age and parts availability.

At 5 years old as low as 15% of trade value can write a car off.

I had a 2002 Astra (cost 10k) for 2 months before a van rear ended me at 60ish while I was sat in a queue of traffic, damage was, as you can imagine, very severe; he hit me at an angle so chassis was twisted, neither passenger side doors would open as boot overlapped back door and back door overlapped front door sealing them shut.

I didn't want the car back after any sort of repair seeing the damage that was caused (I was sure the structures strength could never have been fully repaired). Unfortunately though it was just before VX were bringing out the new Astra and they were selling off the body shells cheap so the assessor said that it was (just) cheaper to repair than write off. I stamped my feet hard and they got another independent assessor out to look at it ... was very touch and go but I spoke to him on phone and let him know how much I didn't want it back and why ... eventually they agreed to write it off.

So if they won’t agree to write yours off straight away I really would push hard to get another assessment.

    Good luck Mate!

    Dave
