Default A bit of advice please

    Hi Guys

    Ive got a 2004 1.9CDti 150 estate, done 60,000 miles

Ive listened with great interest to all the comments but have absolutely no idea about what some of the are that youre talking about

    anyway...

since new, its had its regular servicing, some VX dealership, some local garage when funds are low

I want to keep this car for a good few more years so just want advice as to what i should be looking at replacing/ cleaning out etc to keep my baby at ultimate working order, ive heard you all talk about swirl pots and EGR valves but frankly have no idea what they do etc?

    help please !!!!

Ok just keep reading and look at the links folk post up and learn also look on google for information & the Haynes manual for your car is available a great source for help.

As for keeping this car running leave it alone.!!

What i mean is if it's ok leave it only get the spanners out if it's broken & get it serviced every year & it will run forever more.

Too many tinker and then balls it up if your not competent yet leave well alone.

    Trim : SE Touring

    Engine : 3.0

    Year : 2007

EGR Valve - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve - the EGR system is designed to send some of the exhaust gases back around to mix with the intake air to be burnt again and thus burn any residual fuel in it, whilst also raising the temperature of the intake air more quickly from a cold start. The faster the engine can get up to normal operating temperature, the faster the catalytic convertor(s) can work better.... and the lower the vehicle's emissions.
The valve is a solenoid about the size of your fist, mounted on or about the exhaust manifold (position depends on engine). It will become coked up after a while and can jam. It is easily removed to allow cleaning.

Swirl Valves as I understand them are similar to a throttle butterfly in design and are designed to alter the airflow into the engine dependingon certain parameters. Low revs needing less air for better performance than high revs, which needs masses of air coming in. Bit like an indiviual air throttle for each air intake for each cylinder, but typically all operated by a common rod.
In some engines the operating rod assembly can become detached (due to poor design) rsulting in lousy performance.

Leave it alone? Baloney. It's got a turbo, so do oil changes as frequently as you can afford, and use the best oil you can get.
