Default looking at buying a vectra sri help please!!

    Hi all ,

Im looking at buying a vectra in sri trim with a diesel engine however im not sure which one is going to be best??

currently drive a focus cmax 2.0 derv with 136 bhp and i like the way it goes!!

its on 118000miles now and is starting to need money spending on it so i think its the perfect time to change.

loking at 56/07 plate vectras and you seem to get a lot of car for your cash.

it will spend a lot of time on the motorway but also will be given a good back road blast too!!

which engine is the more reliable out of the 2 bhp versions (120 or 150)

my friend has a 150 54 plate vectra with a tuning box on and it dont half motor! in comparsion it makes my cmax look very slow.

father in law drives an 08 120bhp desing and it seems ok at mway speeds but really slow elewhere??

can you get cruise control on both models?

what is the mpg like on both models?

what do i need to look out for when buying?(egr etc)

any help would be greatly appreciated!

    cheers

    steve

    Hi Steve,

welcome along, OK the story goes, the 120 is OK and some argue more reliable than the 150, however the 150 outsold the 120 many times over if you look at the used examples probably about 6:1

With the 150 it has a few known issues, the DMF flywheel fails and getting it replaced can be expensive however many on here have gone over 100K with no issue so it seems a little down to luck.

The egr valve can clog and fail about a £100 replacement or a two hour DIY clean, grease and repair.
Injector loom for No.3 if yellow will most likely fail and need a £1.00 diy fix
Intake manifold and swirl flaps fail at higher miles and requires a replacement with the later ones.

If you can buy a late 07 on car it has the modified inlet, injector wiring, it still leaves the DMF issue but getting a decent warranty on the car overcomes this and was my ploy. My car had a new one fitted before I got it

In general, you are right they are wonderful cars and very much a pleasure to drive and own, have as many real world faults as other modern diesels no more no less.
Buy the youngest, lowest miles freshest one you can as they are spectacular value and have fun!

thanks very much for the reply.

im having the same sort of issues with my cmax , so far ive had to do the following in the past 4 months......

    egr vlave (done by ford)
    new turbo pipe
    new intake temp sensor
    recon alternator and fuse box
    new disc and pads.

my cmax is starting to get a bit tired and unreliable which is why i m looking at changing.

is there anyway of finding out if a car has had the modified inlet and injector wiring before buying? is it from a 57 plate onwards or can you find them on 07 plates?

what is the servicing like?? as part of the 750000 mile service on the cmax you have to replace the dpf filter which is 500 odd quid!!

are the vectras chain or belt driven?

can you get cruise on both of them?

    thank fo rthe reply again!

    Hi Renton,

I bought an 08 CDTi SRI 150 two years ago and now covered over 50k miles in it with no menchanical issues at all. Alll I've experienced is a squeaky seat and had to have the front susp top shoick bearings replaced - but nothing to do with the engine at all.
I do a mix of motorway and town driving which returns me 52mpg average. The performance is great, really smooth to drive and would certainly recommend one

I have read on here somewhere that the early 150s suffered some issues but have all be rectified in later models 08 and 58.

150 CDTi i believe is belt driven (my 2.2i direct was chain), comes with cruise etc. Earlier pre-facelift have much more toys on too

Hatch Vectra's don't have a DPF only Signum and Estate's so that's no issue.
As DasArab says all apart from Police spec do have cruise, if you aim for SRi it has a decent set of toys plus great seats and a decent ride.

There is no real cut off point but lifting the engine cover and looking at the injector wiring is a decent way to tell as if it is blue then it should be fine.

If buying from a main dealer, get a print off of previous service garages and phone them to see what has been done if it is an ex-company, then call the lease company etc and do a bit of checking it has to be of value on any used purchase not just the Vx.

Remember too that all these forums are full of people having issues, not many bother to post that they just drove 60,000 miles with no issues
I have little of note to report in almost a year of driving two Vectra's and have 21 months of warranty remaining on the current one just in case!
