Default Vectra C steering Column Change.

Have any of you fine people carried out a steering column change?
My 2002 DTI SRI 2.2 has gone very loose, it can be pulled up and down and moved side to side .
Have checked both steering joints on column and both are tight with no play . There is no lose of control over driving wheels , it just seems play is in column.
Took top steering shroud cover off removed speedo to get better look and it appears to me that the adjustable steering wheel mechanism is not gripping propley .All bolts holding column on are tight.
Ebay has columns for about forty pounds so not too bad , to me it appears to be a resonable job to change after all plastics and airbag is removed.
Any advice would be gratefuly recieved .

Under the wheel is a lever you pull it down to release it to allow you to move the wheel to your chosen position, then lock it back up again to hold it in place. It does sound like you've just knocked that open.

Edit: just noticed you mention you've checked the adjustable steering mechanism, so I guess it's not that then.

It does not seem to be although I could be wrong. I couldnt see any obvious part on it when I had the cover off . It seems that its just not gripping inside propley, I dont know how it works but am guessing its some sort of plastic sleeve.
    Thanks for replys so far.

I will try but it appears to me that the adjuster is not a separate item from the column so if the adjuster is knackered I will have to change the whole lot.
