    Default Tools

Been looking at various sets of tools in halfords sale as i plan to get myself some tools and become aquainted with a haynes manual and tis and try to teach myself basics and start doing some work on my car to save some cash.

Are there any basics i can get, certain sockets etc that arre more common or am i better getting a full sets etc? I dont want to buy sets of sockets, 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch etc if theres only one or 2 i would need.

    Any tips appreciated
    G

Will cover pretty much everything, ****** good quality for the price, and easy to store away when not in use if space is limited.

Dont forget to buy a 7mm allen key too for changing brakes

This would be the modern version of the stanley socket set I have, only ever broken 1 socket in 15 or so years (it was my dads set first).

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Stanley-Socket...#ht_2193wt_982

Only difference between that one and mine are that the handles are plastic on the new ones and my ones are rubber. Only socket i've ever had to buy is an 18mm and a 36mm (DTi diesel filter)

    Great value for money imo

I also have this and this which is invaluable when working on modern cars (especially the Vec)

you'll need plenty of torqe bits for cars these days so make sure you get a decent set male and female,

i have the older halfords socket set with the ratchet spanners etc and its brilliant..! cant fault it, ive used the hell out of it and will use it a whole lot more lol

good quality at a price you can afford and it will pay for itself in the end mate,

This is a good set (And £100 off at the moment): http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165572

Also depending on what engine you have you may possibly need 'RIBE' bits as thats what's on the 1.9 CDTI engine (Fiat engine)

Nothing wrong with Halfords tools, they always do well on the Auto Express tests. Saying that I have had my Stanley Socket Set for over 20 years now, only every broken 1 of the very small sockets. It's difficult, there are so many tools out there too buy. I'd defiantly look into a Single Hex set of sockets too. Screwdrivers too, don't buy cheap ones, I have a set of Stanley Magnums that are brilliant.

That's the main set I have and used this week helping Caveman_nige with his turbo upgrade as shown in this pic (yes I know that's not a turbo I'm working on we had to change the fuel pump too lol).

I have several sets of tools (including two halfords sets), but this one is the most commonly used because it covers almost everything in one set. Never broken any Halfords tools to date apart from one 1/2" to 3/8" adaptor that I hung off with all my weight on a two foot breaker bar before it gave lol.

the best thing about these Halfords Advanced Professional tool kits they all come with life time guarantee, so if you do break any of the tools take it back to halfords and they straight swap the broken tool for a new one. they are well worth the money and does cover everything for basic spannering

this is the set i got its quality.

Yup in fairness to them, the one adaptor I did break, I took it back and they swapped it straight away for another one saying it must have had a fault line in the metal (I didn't tell them I'd been hanging on it with a 2 foot bar lol).
