I would be going to vauxhall if its been serviced by them religiously by the book. The chain isn;t meant to be changed for ages and your not that long out of warranty! Thats definately a catastrophic parts quality failure!

They might not do the work for free but I would fight for some reduction in cost. If not, contact GM direct as I emailed them about a header tank replacement that the garage failed to refund me on (it later became a recall) and they transferred the money straight into my account!

My chain on my 2006 Vectra kept intermittantly rattling. Engine had done 49,000 miles and was 8 months out of manufacturers warranty.

Vauxhall ended up paying 70% of the repair cost as it's a known issue the tensioner can fail and they fit the modified one from the 2.0 turbo engine instead.

See the THREAD of mine about it for further details.

I just thought... have you the 2.2 petrol? Now if I recall correctly my best friend had the Vectra B 2.2 on a 2002 plate and he had a problem with the tensioner on the chain!!! Apparently it was a common problem and eventually caused the timing belt to go completely...

It did cross my mind when I first came on the forum but then I thought it might of been modified... I would definately chase it up though. Anyone know if its the same engine?

    hi Gordy

it cost me 1700 to get my car running again and, if i was to do it again, i wouldn't use the same guy who fixed it as it took a while and (six months later) it sounds like it's rattling again.

i think it's a common problem with the 2.2direct... it's a disgrace, vauxhall should be held accountable for it

Does it have full service history, book fully stamped? If it does get it into vauxhall at linwood and push for it to be covered by vauxhall. If arnold clark cant get VX to pay for it phone VX yourself and you will get a decent contribution towards it if you have it fully serviced.

You might be alright mate, it might have only bent a few valves. You really need to get the head off and have a look. The engine may no start because the timing s too far out. When you turned it over did it fly round or turn over normally without starting?
