    Default The silent treatment!!!

    Christmas Greeting to you all,

No the misses hasnt lost her voice, my radio in my 07 vectra sri hatchback isnt working! It started a month or so ago, one morning I turned the radio on and surprisingly couldnt get a signal. Didnt think too much about it as the next time i drove the car everything was fine again. Then it happend for a second time, then was ok again. Now it seems to have gone for good. The funny thing is it seems to be when its freezing cold and noticed one it came back on when the car/weather warmed up a bit. I have noticed the seal on the aeriel has deteriorated and possibly could be letting in water but no signs of water on the headlining.

    Where do I start?

    Moisture in the aerial base...
There is an electronic signal amplifier in there.. the water will not do it any favours..

Consider getting a new base and rubber / plastic seal

Right the base is held onto the roof panel by a big nut and an anti-rattle washer.

To remove, then you need to.

    1) Release the rear of the roof lining - it is help up by little 1" (25mm) squares of Velcro.

    2) Undo the cables / aerial connectors

    3) Undo the big nut on the underside of the roof skin, holding the aerial base to stop it spinning and scratching the outer face of the roof.

    4) lift out the old aerial base.

    5) Feed in the threaded section of the new aerial base, ensuring that you have a decent rubber / plastic gasket underneath it.
To protect the metal-work, I would use either window putty, or Vaseline in the actual hole.

    6) Fit the new nut and anti-rattle washer - tighten the nut, whilst holding the base.

    7) Reconnect up the aerial leads... make sure the connectors are clean and dry.

    8) Refit the roof lining - you may need fresh velcro pieces to do this.

    9) Enjoy you new improved reception..

Note you will need to unscrew the aerial whip from the old base, and screw it into the new base... obviously.

    Job done...

    No problems Andi..

By the way, the roof lining is quite resilient, so don't worry too much about damaging it.

As long as you are not Gun-ho with it, you should be fine

    And yes,
Merry Christmas and a happy year ahead..with some damn fine bangin' tunes

Thanks again Robsey, got the roof lining down, as expected...loads of water and condensation around the ariel. Dried it all out, tested the radio and all came on fine so put all back together and carefully removed the old rubber ariel seal from the roof and took time to mask and reseal with a universal external black sealent...Good Job!!!!

Dont have to listen to the wife now!!!!
