Whatever your problem is it won't be because your petrol has frozen. The freezing point of petrol is around -60C. That should give you a wide enough margin for even the really cold days we have.

Surely it must be the could then? Any other ideas why it would have trouble starting took about 5 attempts and had to give it a few revs to keep it going

Cold does affect the battery quite badly, when you were starting it was it turning over at the the same speed as usual. I've seen it where a car is turning over at just below the point where it will catch and start but in warmer conditions it doesn't struggle at all. What sort of journey does you do, at this time of year most people will be using heated windows, fans full on, lights on etc much more than they would be otherwise and if they do a short journey the battery doesn't get a chance to fully recharge before their jorney is finished.

It was a little slower than usual, and because I didn't give any revs it failed to start the first time, I did about 22 miles this morning took over an hour though due to conditions is the battery on it way out or just the could causing havoc it sounded a bit though until I gave it a revs

Only sure way to know is to get it tested properly, if it's done properly they put a load tester on it and see what state they battery is in. Amongst other places Halfords do a free test, it's wherever you feel comfortable and trust who's doing it.
