You could turn the radiators down in the rooms you are not using. IMO running a complete system is more efficient than running a partial system and ensures a comfortable ambient temperature all over the house. Deliberately letting unused rooms go cold can cause problems that can cause more than what you have saved to rectify.

Thanks everyone, I think from what everyone has said I'll just use the CH and have the the rads on low in the rooms i dont really use. If we're really cold then i'll use the gas fire as a booster.

Do you have TRV's on the rads? If not, that will help

Get yourself an ebac dehumidifier, and when your heating not on,switch the dehum on for a couple of hours and you will be amazed at the amount of water it pulls out of the atmos, place it on the landing and leave your bedroom doors open,if you do this the air is less moist and you can then start to turn your heating down a notch or two,my boiler only ever runs at 50% capacity, this also cuts down on the maintenance bill,in fact you dont need the boiler rip off insurance, just sling an extra tenner in bank each month if your unlucky enough to have a break down,if you don't have one your quids in.
