    Question Snow Socks

    Hi Guys & gals

I read today in my local free paper that Vauxhall now sell 'Snow Socks', it seems they fit any make & model & VX they are better that Snow tyres!

Vauxhall state they are for use at speeds below 50 mph but also say they are only for vital vourneys and should be used at substantially lower speeds than this . they cost £49.99 a pair & yes you fit them to the driven tyres .
Given the bad weather we are experiencing they may be a good Idea?

My Signum can keep going ok in this weather , but stopping is a whole lot more hairy !!

They are excellent, but have to be removed un like snow tyres. I saw a Signum with a shredded set on the other day

I got a clarification email on this earlier - the max speed is actually 30mph - it states 50 Kph on the packaging I believe

I love the fact that VX have apparently come up with the idea! This is the 3rd winter they have been on sale in the UK

Typical!! After taking a while to decide whether to get some or not, I ordered a set from Rock Shore on Monday and they're currently out of stock. New stock expected after 12 December. Being a full member, would that have meant I could have got a trade discount at my local dealers!

The idea's good but if you read through the sales patter take notice of something

"The car giant's new accessory is a pair of fabric snow chains for tyres designed to give the car wheels that extra grip required to drive over thick-laid snow"

I don't see any mention of how they cope with ice anywhere

Yep, no good on ice. However winter tyres are not much good on that either. You need studded tyres for that.

The problem in the uk is the inconsistancy of the conditions. You could need, studded tyres for a icey lane, snow tyres/chains or socks for the higher areas and less well-beaten tracks and just normal tyres are probably fine on the normal roads.

You'd be pulled over swapping all the time!

In general I think a good set of winter tyres would do most people....
