Default Oil Light warning came on tonight

    Hello all

As the heading says my oil light came on tonight.

My Vec is a 2006 1.8 VVT Sri Nav with 53k on the clock.

Can someone advise me what would be the best brand and grade of oil to put in with that amount of miles on the clock. Im not worried about how many pennies it will cost when it comes to oil.

I have access to a warm garage so an oil change would not be a problem in this weather.

    Many thanks

EDIT : I would top it up but I have no idea what is in there at the moment. Only had the car since may this year

Stick a litre in, check the dip-stick, if needed stick more in until it's half way between the markers...

I've never been a person who gives a toss about the brand... If I'm doing a complete change I use a fully-synthetic, but for a top-up a part-synth will be fine.

Before you do anything check the proper level on the dip stick after the car has sat for 20 minutes or so. You may do damage if you just pour in a litre and overfill it. Just get it from Vauxhall if you need any. 5-30 is the correct weight I think.

    Thanks for the replies all.

Im going down to the local supermarket tomorrow (short walk) and getting some top up so I can then be mobile again until I can get the 4.5 litres or so from the Stealers.

Oh the car will be sitting for at least 10 hours now before I check levels. Thanks for the advice though. Always handy to know these things before hand.

    No worries.

It's always possible it can be a duff sensor giving a weird reading. I've never completely trusted them. Always go on what the dip stick says seen as that can't lie.

The oil levels should be checked with the engine hot mate. Run it up to temperature, shut it off, let it sit for 5 mins and then check it

If I check my oil about half an hour after switching off the car, it sits at about 4.5/5 notches on the dipstick. If I leave it overnight, it goes past maximum on the dipstick by a few mm. Does this sound ok or have I overfilled it? I have a 2.0 DTi so I don't think it is good to have it overfilled.
If I need to remove a little oil, what is is the easiest way to do this? I would only need to remove 100-200 mil at most

Isn't there a sticker under the bonnet that tells you to do it when the cars warm but been stopped for a few minuites?
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Not that I've noticed...but I haven't specifically looked for one. Will do when I'm back at the car.
However, I guess that means the oil level is ok! It's about 4/5 notches five mins after stopping, raises into the final notch about half an hour after stopping and only goes over max when left over night.
