Exclamation 1.8VVT Don't neglect spark plug change!

    Hi,

New to Vectra, new to Forum: hope I might save somebody some trouble and expense...

My car is a '57 plate with 63K (warranted) bought at auction last week, with service stamps at 24K and 45K, so I was planning a service very soon.

Third day I was driving it, started to misfire and the ECU warning light came on. A friendly neighbour hooked up the TECH2, which showed 'misfire on cylinder 1'.

I'm sure the plugs were the ORIGINAL ones! Virtually no centre electrode left and hence a gap of about 2.0mm instead of 0.8. Sadly, replacing the plugs did not solve it - I had to replace the COIL PACK too!!

This makes sense because the excessive gap would put a greater 'strain' (ie more than double the voltage) on the coils which seems to have caused the internal insulation on one or more to break down.

So - if only I'd changed the plugs a day earlier, I could have saved £90.

All part of life's rich pageant

Peter yeh blob on with that, ive got a 1.8vvt sri on an 06 done 47k with I think original bosch plugs from new, no centre electode left AA found misfire on 2 cylinders, put new plugs in but NGK's ZFR5F, still didnt run right, I thought it was these plugs at first but its the coil pack like you said, the AA mech said if it still runs crap after new plugs try a coil pack, bought the original Delphi £90.
ALLS I WOULD SAY IS CHANGE YEH PLUGS EVERY 20K

I put a set of VX plugs in my none vvt, 10,000 mile(12 months) later thought I would have a lookie see if they were ok as mpg had droped a bit, I was very surprised to see that although the plugs looked in perfect condition/ colour ect, the gaps were all over the place/all three on each plug were different some massive some nearly closed up,, put a set of bosch super in then checked them after 10,000 miles,,,perfect.. perhaps the VX plugs were a faulty batch,

yep I have had same issue exactly, slight misfire which turned into severe misfire...changed plugs mostly fixed it but needed new coil pack to get rid completely. Z18xe
