Default now economy doesn't matter too much...

Its been a slow afternoon at work and Ive been having a browse on autotrader which got me thinking.... In 3 weeks Im moving 4 miles away from work so fuel economy isn't going to be quite as important as it was when I bought my 2.2DTi. Should I start saving some pennies & chop the Veccy in for a GSI or save some pennies and buy a 2nd, fun car? Perhaps a 205GTi or mk1 Golf GTi etc...

I've been thinking the same, looking at an Astra coupe 2.0Turbo, then again thats too lots of MOT, Tax, and insurance. The biggest problem I find is that i can't be without at car so any work/mods I want I can't really get done due to the car always being in use where as a second car will allow for this.

It must be something in the water as I'm in a similar situation Dave, although for different reasons. I'm thinking, do I trade mine in for something newer or spend quite alot on the one I've got. I leaning towards spending money on mine because It's never really let me down in the 3 and a half years I've had it, just an alternator. So I'm thinking better the devil you know. If you haven't spent alot on your 2.2 I'd go for the GSI a big boys toy. lol.

For me think it would be a 3.0 CDTi, something with a bit of poke but with the ability to return reasonable mpg if needed. And yes I know the 1.9 can be tuned to the same as the 3.0 but id just fancy that lazy v6 diesel under the bonnet.

Well, whatever you have for the short journeys, make sure its suitable as some cars dont like short journeys (battery life, engine wear etc)

I like having two cars, it splits the difference and I appreciate both for what they are...

I'd love to buy a newer Vec but I feel that I am so deep into the one I have that i'd be just as well keeping mine and "finishing it"

No way in earth would I trade in for a Gsi, with petrol at the highest its ever been and ANOTHER rise in the new year. Credit to the fella's that have them but its getting to eye watering fuel costs these days even with low mileage use. And if I was then it would be a nice 330/530.

I did the latter of your suggestions..

I keep a 'newer' car for the family (at the moment a 1.9CDTi), and bought a toy for fun..

Mk2 Astra GTE Convertible.. Word of advice though, if you are going to buy something for fun of that sort of age, then be prepared to get your hands dirty, and your wallet a bit emptier.. At 20, the GTE needs a lot of TLC, and parts are starting to get rare..

Wouldn't get rid of it for the world though.. Its not fast by today's standards, but it's great fun to drive, and to work on.. When you open the bonnet, there's none of this engine-bling plastic, just a good ol' engine, with everything in easy-ish reach..

The biggest thing to remember is that buying an old car can be cheaper on tax for (OK a bit of an extreme) example -
    Vectra VXR ~ 280 BHp (depending on version) - VED ~ £430..
    Lotus Carlton ~ 377 BHp - VED ~ £205 .. Yes, that's a year!
