To be honest if they are required to drive at excess speed as part of their jobs,

then they should be 'made' to fit winter tyres at this time of year

there trained to drive to the prevailing weather conditions = they shouldnt be driving at any speed greater than anyone else in snow and ice as even with training you can still easily come unstuck and most of the cars are loaded heavier in the boot with all of the kit that they carry - once a car starts to fishtail its very difficult to correct - not disimilar to a tankslapper on a motorcyle

Do the emergency services fit winter tyres, and if not why not?

My force fits all-weather tyres all year round, AFAIK.
