Do the emergency services fit winter tyres, and if not why not?

Only asking as got passed by a Volvo police car a couple of weeks ago, that was trying to drive through an uncleared bit of snow and seemed to be struggling for grip (id just gone through the same bit at similar speeds with out any issues)

From what I've been told, no they don't.... However it may be regional?

The Police are not immune to the "just get a 4x4" mentality, their purchasing people are just pencil pushers and the people who know the technical stuff probably don't get much say.

I'd be interested to see if this gets any definitive answers

Suffolk never used to change theirs and with current budget contraints = i cannot see there being any change to the policy ....and now with health and saftey you have to risk asses yourself = if its too dangerous they just wont go out in the cars

Maybe it's just Volvo's, i know mine is shocking in the snow.
I'll take note next time I see a traffic car and see what it has fitted.

You would think the sweedes would know what they were doing when it came to the white stuff. Although our 940 never got stuck! We did use snow chains on it though

They probably try and save money by not using winter tyres, but then waste it on lunacy like replacing all FIVE tyres (yes, even the spare) if ONE tyre gets punctured:

To be honest if they are required to drive at excess speed as part of their jobs,

then they should be 'made' to fit winter tyres at this time of year
