Default venting to atmosphere can the pipe be as long as needed

just put a a catch tank on the cdti but then decided to not use the tank and just vent to atmosphere, now the pipe that vents to atmosphere is 1.5 metres long as it goes around the bulk head, down the wing and out the undertray at the front of the vehicle, will having th pipe this long cause any problems or is it ok

Thats just fine!, i had mine coming towards the front next to the air box than down, coming out in front of the wheel by the underpan cover. blank the rubber pipe next to the dipstick, then it will self clean the intercooler over a few weeks.

Catch tank? 1.5m long pipe? WHY? If you are intending to vent engine fumes into the atmosphere I think that this may be illegal under the EU and MOT rules, if I am incorrect I will no doubt be put right by a member, plus in traffic there is a possability the fumes will drift up into the cabin and choke you!!! Are they engine fumes and are they that bad?

Will not fail an mot you just get an advisory. They are blowback fumes from the piston rings the gasses that get past mix with the oil in the sump then get drawn into the intake to get burned again however this draws in oil too which clogs up the inlet manifold and causes problems to no end hence why ppl do this mod.

And the hose length is fine mate as long as there is fumes etc coming out the pipe it's working

This has been done by many members, its 100% legal & does not come into the mot at all!, if done like said & vented down ways as most do when venting to atmos its just fine, & the reason for doing this is because vx have yet failed again to make a system that cant keep oil from being sucked into the inlet / intercooler system. ps no addvisory as its nothing to do with the mot as ive asked at several stations.

There shouldn't be any problems whatsoever. However,I had mine tied to the end of the front subframe but found I could smell the exhaust fumes so I moved it further back, and now it's fixed to one of the exhaust hangers,(away from the exhaust),around about the back box area, and I have no troubles at all. If your car has been serviced recently & is in good condition (recent service) this mod would not effect your mpg!, but the cold weather & the anti wax additive to diesel doesn't help at all!, I'm finding the journey i usually do i now get 43-48 max but b4 the cold snap i would get 52-56, you could also try resetting the mpg regularly as i find mine seems to stick!, so to speak & gives a more accurate reading by resetting before a run. plus the diesel is 'cold' & in warmer months your mpg will naturally improve!.
