Default Hole in Exhaust back box

Failed the MOT the other day on a couple of things but one thing would be that there was a hole in the back box of the Exhaust, Is this bad for your health as i was reading on the internet something about the exhaust fumes will leak into your car so you should drive with the windows down at all time.

The main thing i wanted to ask was that i only seem to be getting like 300 miles/360 the best to a full tank of fuel, would this hole affect the MPG and also the all round performance of the car, as i seem to think it is abit sluggish.

    Thanks

Havin a hole in the back box will not put fumes into the car, unless you also have a hole in the bottom of the car near the hole.
The back back itself has a hole in it normally!

The hole may affect performance/MPG depending on where it is and how big it is.

Either way, its has a hole in it. Get it replaced!

I know i need it replaced but just to get it through the MOT i think i may just get it filled in, if it can be filled in. And then when the weather gets better get a whole new exhaust and fit it myself so it will be cheaper.

If you cant get access to a welder as cranny27 has suggested, i believe you can still patch them up for mots providing it is a secure repair, i recently patched one with a piece of thin sheet steel, sandwiched some exhaust paste between that and the box, then secured it with a strip of that steel band and fastening (its like an overgrown jubilee clip). Hope this helps

And yes Ed i have heard about this , but With the weather this crap i think i would rather pay somebody to do the work then me try it myself as long as they dont go overboard and try and charge something stupid to fix the hole.
