    Default Exhaust fumes in cabin

Need some advice as Iím coming to the end of my rope. My car (Vectra 1.8 LS Petrol) was serviced in September. Shortly afterwards I thought I could smell oil/exhaust I the cab. I took it back to my garage who have been great, three times theyíve been through it now but to no avail. Iím going to say that itís seems stronger on the drivers side as no one in the passenger side apart from one mechanic has smelled it. Seems also to come in bursts and when itís particularly strong I can feel it in my throat mouth and my nostrils for hours. Canít even say itís worse when stationery as it is very random when it appears. If I put the vents on a high power and put my nose to them itís fine which is baffling unless the smell is not coming from the engine compartment. The car running as good as it ever has after the service but the odour is taking the shine off the benefit of a great service. The garage have re sealed the exhaust, checked the vents, air con with a Ďsnifferí. I have cleared out the scuttle drain and replaced the pollen filter just in case it was dampness. The car is dry of any oil spills that could be burning, no leaks marks on the garage floor. Just at an absolute loss as to where to look next. Any experience would be greatly appreciated as I reckon I canít expose myself to it for too much longer. Thanks in advance folks.

How old is your car? Sounds like it could be the flexi pipe on the exhaust has split. Do you ever hear a slight rasp from the exhaust? Only way to have a proper good look is get it on a ramp with the engine running and pull down on either side of the flexi section if its that they should hear it.

The decent going rate seems to be about £60 to get one supplied and fitted, exhaust shops will do this for you.

Happy New Year folks. Latest. Took it to an ex-Vauxhall guy who set up on his own and he gave it a run out and also got under and checked the exhaust and flexi pipe. All ok. He reckoned the smell may have been air con and recommended a 'clean out aerosol' which I duly purchased and used. I would say now the smell is more damp than exhaust. Checked my shuttle drain wasn't blocked and cleared out the little drain. I am beat. I will keep plodding away and if I eventually get it I will get back.

02 plate, so yours has an EGR valve, have you had a look to see it is leaking?

EGR replaced 2 years ago....haven't checked it. I would have to get my garage to do that but thanks for the tip. Looking at all avenues now as this is driving me. Just got back in it for the first time in ten days feeling brilliant - on 30 mile drive and I feel like sh*t !

When I first thought this was an oil spill, under the bonnet was checked and everything appeared dry. Only thing under there that has been leaking is the seal at the bottom of the washer bottle for the screen wash.
