    Default Start-Up

Now its colder on start-up i get like a miss as soon as it starts...glow plug light comes on..goes off ok and no other warning lights appear on the dash.

It sounds like its of a pot for a split second then fine...

    Car as per my sig...

Would you go for glow plugs?

I would get them all checked, you might have one breaking down or something.

in cold weather like this i always run glow plugs twice

makes for an easier start up

you can test your plugs with 12 v battery and a couple of leads but be very careful as plugs get very very hot

maybe also check and clean egr and boost sensor - cheap and easy to do and can only help performance

probably nothing to worry about in the freezin temps we have atm, just try warming the glow plugs twice before attempting to start, see it that makes a difference.

Agree. Need more heat in these winter temps.

If two turns of the glow plugs gives better results, it might be worth changing them.

Cheers guys...will try that tommorow...whilst coming home tonight the temp went allready to -7 so its gonna be cold again....

Egr and everything else replaced not 1000 miles ago so hopefully that should be ok..i'm confident 2 turns though should be enough...

    Why didn't i think of that...what a div!!!

Must be a CDTi thing... My 2.2 DTi SRi always cold-starts with no hesitation (even with no glow plug assistance, although I do use them), but my other half's 1.9 CDTi SRi 150 is rough for a few secs on cold-start, even with 2 or 3 glow plug cycles, only since the big freeeeeze

You shouldn't need to give the glow plugs a twice go, Ive owned diesels for 25yrs plus & never done this! & ive never had a diesel fail to start or be a bad starter in cold conditions, My own 04rg cdti 150 stands all week as i now only use it at weekends, I notice as i did yesterday when i had to move it the glow plug light stayed on FAR longer than normal & it fired up instantly as always, ITS STILL ON ITS ORIGINAL GLOW PLUGS FROM NEW!, over using the glow plugs with 'extra pre start up heat' will shorten the lifespan of the plugs. You may notice some slight difference on very cold starts but that's the nature of diesel engines as the fuel ignites under pressure & being very cold its just a slightly rougher start up on some models.

I take your point 'THE WIZARD' did the 2 times on with the glow plug light this morning and made no differance..since the freeze came its just a little rough for a second on inital start-up then picks up fine...so with no lights on the dash indicating an issue it may just be the way engine runs on inital start-up from very cold....

I'm sure if anythings amiss a light will come on and let me know.

i only double glow on temps of -4 or less. it does make a difference, less lumpy

so thats only really about 4 times a year normally, albeit 4 times this last week alone

glow plugs were original till i replaced as preventative maintenance. reckon 5 years is good for these
