    Default automatic gearchange

When you press the button on the knob of the gear change lever what exactly does it do?

I know it inhibits movement of the lever into/out of park and reverse gear but is this effected electrically or mechanically?

    Default

As i understand this, it is a mechanical lock to prevent inadvertant shifting of the gears and the mechanisim is linked to an inhibitor switch, which prevents starting the engine when in drive or reverse.
