Default XL tyres on 1.9cdti or not?

Hi just a quick question. Do i need xl tyres on my 1.9 cdti ?
I got a puncture last nite & as the car came with 2 cheap wanli tyres on the front i'm going to replace the 2 of them.
I think i'll be sticking with 215/50/17s & not going for 225/45/17s do i need to fit 215/50/17 xl though?

It will do no harm and might increase tyre life somewhat, I can coment on a Saab 9-5 on 225/45 non XL would get 12K miles on front tyres but on XL's of the same make around 20K miles

I've just checked the 2 NCT 5's on the rear they're not xl's. I'm sure my last 55 plate had xl's on it all round! The cheap & nasty Wanlis aren't xl's either!

In 215/50R17 the XL can often be cheaper
The preferred minimum rating is 91W

The only place open today thats close to me & has 2 215/50/17's in stock is Kwik Fit!. The guy said he'll match the online price which is £117.66 each .

Edit: Just checked other tyre websites online thats not a bad price for them although they weren't my first choice.

What brand and spec is that though?
If that is the Good Year NCT5 91W then that is about the right price
If that is the Good Year NCT5 95W XL then that is very good

I started off buying the Good Year NCT5 95W XL at £150 each
I then swapped to the Good Year F1 GSD3 94Y XL at £95 each, but it did mean swapping to 225/45R17; no difference apart from the price!
